The Frame drum originates in the Middle East and is among the oldest of drums. Frame drums can be played using a traditional style with fingers, striking edge of drum producing a "tak" tone. It can also be held with one hand and played with a soft mallet or straddled between the knees like a bongo drum.

There are four basic types of frame drums found throughout the Middle East and its surrounding areas. Tar The tar is the oldest and most basic Middle Eastern frame drum, being simply a skin (usually goat) mounted on a shallow hoop ranging from 10 to 22 inches in diameter.

Much Middle Eastern music today features full drum kits, drum machines, dj. Loops and samples. Recording artists are absorbing the influence of other countries no surprise that instruments and rhythms from Brazil, Argentina, Spain, and even Hip-hop from the U.S. can be found in Middle Eastern music.

Instruments from the musically rich region of the Middle East - goblet drums like the doumbek and darbuka; frame drums like the tar, daf, and bendir; and effects like finger cymbals. You’ll find many items here made by professional manufacturers, including Meinl, Remo, LP and Zildjian.

The Mimi Spencer books are great! Yeah, sometimes the Balkans and culture overlap West Asian/Central Asian culture–especially the music. Some tunes are shared from as Eastern Europe as far as South Asia–I play this wonderful and gorgeous Klezmer tune called “Araber Tantz” which I recently heard an Indian version of (in 7/8) that folks there claim is a tune .
